One-to-One Bespoke Tuition
Tailored lessons for students and adults
Every student learns differently. Some do well in a small group, and others make the most progress when every lesson is built around them. One-to-one lessons go at your child’s pace and focus on the texts and skills they need. I bring over 25 years of classroom teaching, experience as a Head of English and an examiner’s understanding of what the exams reward. The aim is for English to make sense, and for your child to become a confident, independent reader and writer.
Bespoke daytime lessons: home education and adults. Monday to Thursday, planned around what the student wants to read, write and achieve. For home-educated students, lessons can follow their interests, work alongside the Creative Reading & Writing group, or build steadily towards GCSE or IGCSE.
For adults, they suit anyone who enjoyed English at school and misses it, has always meant to read the classics, or wants to write but doesn’t know where to start.
Ages 11 to 14: reading, writing and enrichment. Building vocabulary, deeper reading and confidence in creative writing, without the pressure of exam mark schemes. This suits curious school students and home-educated students who want structured progress.
GCSE and IGCSE: Years 10 and 11, and private candidates. Preparation matched to your child’s exam board: AQA, Edexcel, OCR, Eduqas or Cambridge IGCSE. We work on their set texts, such as Macbeth, An Inspector Calls, Jekyll and Hyde and the poetry anthology, build confidence with unseen extracts, and turn straightforward paragraphs into well-argued essays.
A-Level Literature: Years 12 and 13. Close analysis, comparative essays, critical perspectives and support with coursework (NEA), for students aiming for the A and A* grades they need for university.

Format and cost
Where: live online on Google Meet, through Google Classroom, or face-to-face in OX13
Evening lessons and Saturdays: £55 per hour, paid weekly before each lesson or for the half term in advance
Daytime lessons: £45 per hour, Monday to Thursday
Paired lessons: two friends or siblings can share a lesson for £35 each
How we get started
Step 1, a free chat: a short phone or video call about progress, exam board, set texts and goals
Step 2, the first lesson: I get to know the student’s strengths, writing habits and what to work on, in a relaxed and encouraging way
Step 3, a plan: I put together a plan covering the skills and texts they need, and we review it as they progress
