Beyond the Classroom
English Enrichment for Home Educators
English teaching that works around your child, not a curriculum
Home education gives children something schools rarely can: the freedom to learn at their own pace, follow their own interests and develop as genuine thinkers. My role is to bring structured, expert English teaching into that space — without replicating the pressures of the classroom.
I work with home-educated students across a wide range of ages and abilities, offering flexible, individualised sessions that are built entirely around each child's needs, interests and goals.
What Sessions Can Cover
There is no fixed curriculum here. Sessions are shaped by the student in front of me and what will genuinely benefit them. Depending on your child's age, stage and interests, we might focus on:
Reading and Literary Study
Developing close reading skills and the ability to write analytically about texts
Exploring a wide range of literature — novels, poetry, short stories, non-fiction
Building a genuine love of reading alongside the ability to think and write about it carefully
Creative Writing
Finding a writing voice and learning to use it with confidence
Experimenting with different forms — narrative, descriptive, poetry, personal essay
Developing craft: structure, language, rhythm, detail and revision
Essay Writing and Argument
Learning to construct a clear, well-reasoned written argument
Developing analytical skills that will serve students across all subjects
Building confidence with extended writing at any level
English Language and Communication
Strengthening grammar, vocabulary and written expression
Developing the ability to write clearly and precisely for different purposes and audiences
Building spoken confidence through discussion and structured conversation
GCSE and A-Level Preparation
For home-educated students working towards formal qualifications, I offer full GCSE and A-Level tuition alongside enrichment work
I can support students studying independently with any major examination board
How It Works
Sessions are available during the day, which suits the rhythms of most home-educating families. They can take place in person in Oxfordshire or online across the UK.
Because every home-educated student is different, I always begin with an informal conversation with parents and, where appropriate, the student themselves. This helps me understand what your child has already covered, what they enjoy, where they find things difficult and what you are hoping sessions will achieve.
From there, I put together a flexible plan that can evolve as your child progresses. There are no rigid schemes of work and no unnecessary pressure — just purposeful, enjoyable sessions with a clear sense of direction.
Pricing
1:1 Enrichment Session (1 hour)£55
Small Group Session (up to 4 students) £25 per student
Sessions for home-educated students can be booked flexibly rather than on a fixed half-term basis, depending on your family's needs. Please get in touch to discuss what would work best.
Why Work With Me?
I have spent 25 years teaching English in secondary schools, including extensive experience as a Head of Department. I understand how young people develop as readers and writers — what gets in the way, what unlocks progress and what makes the difference between a student who can write and one who genuinely wants to.
I also hold an enhanced DBS certificate and have experience working with students of a wide range of abilities, learning styles and backgrounds. I understand that home-educated students often bring a depth of curiosity and independence that is a genuine pleasure to work with.
As a parent of two teenage boys, I also understand the thought and care that goes into choosing the right approach for your child. I am always happy to have an informal conversation before you commit to anything.
Getting in Touch
If you would like to find out more, please get in touch for an informal chat. There is no obligation and no pressure — just an honest conversation about whether this could be the right fit for your child.
