October half-term

Four days of focused online revision for Year 11, Monday 26 to Thursday 29 October

Mocks are coming, whether your child sits them in December or January. These short online courses work through the skills the exams reward, one topic a day, so students go back to school with a clear plan and more confidence. Year 10 students who want a head start are welcome too.

There are two courses. Book one or both.

English Language: 10:00 to 11:00

•     Monday 26 October: Reading fiction

•     Tuesday 27 October: Creative writing

•     Wednesday 28 October: Reading non-fiction

•     Thursday 29 October: Viewpoint writing

English Literature: 12:00 to 13:00

•     Monday 26 October: Shakespeare, from extract to whole play

•     Tuesday 27 October: The 19th-century novel

•     Wednesday 28 October: Modern prose or drama

•     Thursday 29 October: Poetry, comparison and unseen

The Literature sessions teach essay skills that work for any set text. I model them with the most widely studied texts, including Macbeth, A Christmas Carol and An Inspector Calls, and students apply them to their own. When you book, let me know your child’s exam board and set texts, and I will make sure there is something for each of them.

Group GCSE course after half-term

Get GCSE Ready: Language

A six-week online course for Year 11, starting after half-term

GCSE English Language is the exam every student sits, and one of the hardest to revise for, because there is no content to learn. It is all skill. This course takes each part of the exam in turn, with practice, feedback and timed work, in a group of no more than five.

Over the six weeks

•     Week 1: Reading fiction, language and structure

•     Week 2: Reading fiction, evaluating a writer’s choices

•     Week 3: Creative writing

•     Week 4: Reading non-fiction, comparing writers

•     Week 5: Viewpoint writing

•     Week 6: Timed practice and next steps

Each week your child receives short written feedback on one piece of work. The skills taught apply to all the main exam boards; let me know which one your child sits when you book.

Choose a time

Mondays: 17:00 to 18:00, 2 November to 7 December

Wednesdays: 19:00 to 20:00, 4 November to 9 December

Cost

£150 for six sessions, live online. You pay £25 for the first session, and the remaining £125 before week two.

One-to-one GCSE tuition

Weekly lessons built entirely around your child

Some students do best with undivided attention: those aiming for the top grades, those who have lost confidence, and those preparing for a resit. One-to-one lessons start from where your child is now and focus on exactly what will make the biggest difference to their grade.

Lessons cover both English Language and English Literature, on any of the main exam boards. That can mean working through set texts, building essay technique, preparing for mocks, or practising timed papers with detailed feedback. After the first lesson, I will suggest a plan, and we adjust it as your child progresses.

When and where

Lessons are an hour long, online or face-to-face in OX13. Weekday afternoon, early evening, and Saturday morning slots are available, and a weekly slot is held for your child once booked.

Cost

£55 per hour. Two friends or siblings can share a lesson for £35 each.

You can pay weekly, by bank transfer before each lesson, or for the half term in advance. Lessons missed with less than 24 hours’ notice are charged in full.
