If your secondary school-aged son or daughter is looking for support or enrichment in English, or is going into Year 10/11 or Year 13 knowing that something needs to shift, you are in the right place.

I am Helen. I spent over twenty-five years teaching English in secondary schools, as a classroom teacher, Head of Department, Form Tutor and Pastoral Lead. Now I teach one-to-one and in small groups, online and from my workspace in OX13.

I know where students get stuck, because I have taught hundreds of them through it. From structuring an answer that builds a clear argument to writing about a poem without simply listing the techniques to finding something to say about a text they have read four times and stopped seeing. I also know what examiners are looking for.

But the reason I do this is simpler than exam results. When a student genuinely understands a text and when they have a view about it worth defending, the grades tend to follow as a consequence.

Getting started is easy. We talk for fifteen minutes, free and with no obligation. If we go ahead, your child has the same slot every week and you can pay week by week, before each lesson, or book a full half term, whichever suits you. There is no joining fee and no minimum number of sessions.

Enrichment that opens minds. Tuition that builds confidence.

About Helen Kirby English

I've spent over 25 years teaching English in UK secondary schools as a classroom teacher, Head of Department, Form Tutor and Pastoral Lead. I know the curriculum inside out, I understand what examiners are looking for, and I've helped hundreds of students find their confidence on the page.

Now I bring that experience directly to your child.

As a parent of two teenage boys, I also bring something that goes beyond qualifications: I know first-hand what it feels like to watch your child struggle under the pressure of exams, to worry about whether they're getting the right support, and to want more for them than the school system can always provide. That understanding shapes everything about the way I teach, including my experience supporting students who feel anxious about English or learn differently, both in the classroom and as a parent myself.

A safe, supportive space
I hold an enhanced DBS certificate, and I aim to create an online and face-to-face environment that is calm, encouraging and genuinely effective; the kind of space I'd want for my own children.
